CRN’s for Variable-Credit Courses, Fall 2009

Since you can’t tell what CRN’s you’ve received permits for, especially for variable credit courses like 5000, 7000, and 8000, here’s a list of CRN’s you can use. The list of organized courses (http://www.english.ttu.edu/tcr/Grad_Courses/GradFall2009.asp) contains CRN’s for those courses.

ENGL 5000 (professional development hours) – use section 027, CRN 14858 for 3 hours
ENGL 7000 (qualifying exam hours) for 3, 6, or 9 hours, use 027, CRN 22936
ENGL 8000 (dissertation)

• For local students, use section 027, CRN 22937 for 3, 6, or 9 hours
• For online students who are Texas Residents, section D21, CRN 21742 for 3, 6, or 9 hours
• For online students who are non-residents, section D31, CRN 21743 for 3, 6, or 9 hours

Summer 2009 CRN’s for 7000, 8000

Here are CRN’s for summer 1 and summer 2 sessions. Unless you’re trying to match up a GPTI appointment or the requirements of financial aid or fellowship), you’ll probably sign up for summer 1.

Variable Credit

When you register yourself for a course that carries variable credit, double- and triple-check your registration. Why? Because the default hours you get when you sign up for a course is 1.0, and unless that’s what you want, you need to click on that “1.0″ and change the hours to 3.0 or 6.0 or 9.0 or whatever we have discussed.

I would fix this in permits except for 2 very important details. First, the permits area of Banner doesn’t have any place for me to indicate the number of hours. All I can do is give you permits with a CRN. Second, none of the variable credit courses in TCR (i.e. 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000) are supposed to require permits in the first place.

Tricking Registration

If you’ve accidentally signed up for the wrong section number of a course that doesn’t require a permit, like 5000, 7000, 8000, you can’t just go into Raiderlink and drop it. Why? I think you can’t drop all your registrations once you’ve got an active one. So here’s what I do for you, and what I’d like you to do for yourselves.

Just do the old switcheroo. Let’s say you accidentally registered for section 003 of 8000 (CRN 55555) and you need section D21 (66666). Since you can’t add more of the same course (it’s variable credit, and the right way to do that is to increase the number of hours, right?), you need to first add a “dummy” course. In this case, let’s add 7000 section whatever (CRN 444444). Once it’s added, then you can drop the offending 8000 (555555). Once it’s dropped, you can add the new 8000 (666666) and drop the dummy course (444444). Voilà.

Registration and Section Numbers

ENGL 5000 Professional Development
This course is used for MATC portfolio preparation and for any student taking coursework who needs extra hours in order to maintain 3 hours in order to keep their financial aid, student loans, teaching assistantship, or research assistantship. Sign up for local instructor’s section number for variable credit. Sec. 11=Borshuk, for example.

ENGL 5300 Independent Study
Online students register for section D21 (Texas residents) or D31 (non-Texas residents), regardless of the instructor. Local students sign up for the instructor’s section (Grass, Carter, Dragga, for example).

ENGL 5378 Internship
All online students register for section D21 or D31, regardless of the internship instructor of record. Local students sign up for the instructor’s section.

ENGL 7000 Research
English 7000 is used for preparation for qualifying exams, and online students may register for section 027 (Carter) or 009 (Dragga) for 3 hours (reducible to 1 hour by student petition for extraordinary circumstances).

ENGL 8000 Dissertation Hours
All online students register for section D21 or D31, regardless of their dissertation director. Local students sign up for the instructor’s section.

All dissertation students (online and on-campus) register for ENGL 8000 at a level of 3 units fall, 3 units spring, and 1-3 units in the summer term of their choice. More hours may be taken, as 8000 is a variable-credit course — a student might be ready to graduate and still lacks 5 units, for example. In the semester of graduation, they will register for at least 3 hours. This policy is in accordance with the graduate school’s requirements. (In all but the graduation semester, long semester hour requirements may be reducible to 1 hour by student petition for extraordinary circumstances.)

New Courses Approved

I’m happy to be able to announce to you that the four course proposals we worked on this past fall have been approved and will henceforth be in the course catalog.

• We renamed 5361 from Theories of Invention in Rhetoric to Introduction to Rhetorical Theory (catalog: “Classical and modern theories of rhetoric and rhetorical activity”)
• We added 5379, Empirical Research Methods In Technical Communication and Rhetoric, prereq 5363 or equivalent. (catalog: “Empirical Research Methods in Technical Comunication and Rhetoric”) — repeatable for credit when the topic varies
• We added 5382, Theory and Research in the Written Discourses of Health and Medicine (catalog: “Current theory and research in the written discourses of health and medicine, focusing on the foles of technical and professional communicators”) — repeatable for credit when the topic varies
• We added 5383, Grants and Proposals (catalog: “Theoretical issues and practical experience dealing with the genre and process of writing grants and proposals”) — not repeatable for credit.

Depending on timing, these may or may not be included in the printed catalog for fall 2009, but I believe they’ll be available for registration with their new numbers in time for fall registration in April.

Improvisation for Spring 2009

In order to accommodate growth, we have adjusted 2 courses.

1. we have split Dr. Kemp’s 5364 into 2 sections, one meeting on Wednesday night and one on Thursday night.
2. we combined and re-organized Dr. Rickly’s and Dr. Baake’s 5389 sections to redistribute students more evenly.

In both cases, you’re registered for a section number (let’s say D21) and that will determine your billing (due to your status), but that section number has nothing to do with your instructor or your discussion night. It’s a little odd, but it’s one way of dealing with relatively late developments.

Section Numbers

When we moved to our new registration system, we had to change our section numbering system. On-campus sections are still numbered 001, 002, and so on, but the old method of naming distance sections 270 or 271 for MATC and PhD Texas residents and 370 or 371 for Phd non-Texas residents has changed.

I apologize if there are web pages or correspondence that refer to the old scheme, but what used to be 270 or 271 is now D21 or D22 (i.e .Distance section 21 or 22), and what used to be 370 or 371 is now D31 or D32.

Recall that all students taking distance courses will sign up for D21 or D22 EXCEPT out-of-state online doctoral students, who will sign up for D31 or D32 — and this is because of the way we have to bill the out-of-state students.

5388 cancelled for summer

The online version of 5388 (i.e. section 271 in summer 1) has been canceled for lack of sufficient enrollment.
